The Best Hair Care Routine for Dry, Color-Treated Hair: A Stylist’s Guide
Color-treated hair can look incredible, but keeping it healthy takes a little more intention than simply using whatever shampoo happens to be in the shower.
As a stylist, one of the biggest things I see is hair that isn’t necessarily damaged beyond repair. It’s often just dry, overworked, or missing the right balance of moisture, protection, and gentle care.
If your hair feels rough, tangles easily, looks dull, or your color seems to lose its shine too quickly, your routine may need a few adjustments.
Here’s the routine I recommend for keeping dry, color-treated hair soft, shiny, manageable, and healthy-looking between salon visits.
Step 1: Start With a Gentle, Color-Safe Shampoo
The first step is choosing a shampoo that cleans your scalp and hair without leaving it feeling stripped.
Color-treated hair can already be more vulnerable to dryness, especially if you lighten your hair, get highlights or balayage, or regularly use heat.
For color-treated hair, I love the Kinactif Color Protecting Shampoo. It’s designed specifically for color-treated hair and is a great choice when you want to cleanse while still being mindful of your color and moisture.
If dryness is your biggest concern, the Kinessences Nourish Gentle Shampoo is another favorite for hair that feels dehydrated or needs extra nourishment.
Focus most of your shampoo on the scalp rather than aggressively scrubbing the ends. Your ends usually don’t need the same amount of cleansing. Let the shampoo rinse through them naturally.
Stylist Tip
You do not necessarily need to shampoo your hair every single day.
For many people with dry or color-treated hair, washing less frequently can help preserve moisture and keep color looking fresh longer.
The right schedule depends on your scalp, lifestyle, texture, and how much styling product you use.
Step 2: Condition Every Time You Shampoo
Conditioner should be a regular part of your routine, especially after lightening or color services.
Apply conditioner mainly through your mid-lengths and ends, where hair tends to be driest.
For dry or damaged hair, I love using the Kinactif Nourishing 2-in-1 Conditioner + Mask.
What I like about a 2-in-1 formula is that you can adjust how you use it depending on what your hair needs. It works beautifully as part of a regular conditioning routine while also giving you the option for a more intensive treatment.
Let your conditioner sit for a few minutes before rinsing instead of putting it on and immediately washing it out.
And if your hair gets weighed down easily, keep heavier conditioning products away from the roots and concentrate them through the lengths and ends.
Step 3: Add a Hair Mask Once or Twice a Week
This is one of my favorite steps for maintaining healthy-looking color-treated hair.
A nourishing hair mask gives dry or processed hair an extra level of conditioning beyond your everyday routine.
For color-treated hair, try the Color Protecting 2-in-1 Mask.
If your main concern is intense dryness, the Kinessences Nourish Intense Mask is a beautiful option for adding deeper moisture to dry or overprocessed hair.
For most people, using a mask about once a week is a great place to start.
If your hair is very dry, coarse, highlighted, bleached, or frequently heat-styled, you may benefit from using one twice a week.
Fine hair may need less frequent masking or a lighter amount of product.
How to Use a Hair Mask
After shampooing, gently remove excess water from your hair.
Apply your mask through the mid-lengths and ends, concentrating on the driest areas.
Leave it on according to the product directions, then rinse thoroughly.
More product does not automatically mean better results. You want your hair nourished, not coated.
Step 4: Never Skip Leave-In Protection
Once you get out of the shower, protecting your hair becomes just as important as washing it properly.
A good leave-in treatment can help with softness, detangling, manageability, and protection from everyday styling.
For color-treated or heat-styled hair, I recommend the Color Protecting Melting Extract.
It’s an easy step to add before styling, especially if your hair has been colored, lightened, or regularly exposed to heat.
And if you blow-dry, curl, or straighten your hair, always use appropriate heat protection.
Repeated heat without protection can make already-dry hair feel even more brittle and rough over time.
Step 5: Be Gentle With Wet Hair
Wet hair is more delicate than dry hair.
Instead of aggressively rubbing your hair with a towel, gently squeeze out excess water.
Use a wide-tooth comb or a brush designed for detangling and start from the ends, slowly working upward.
This can help reduce unnecessary pulling and breakage.
A leave-in or detangling product can also make this step much easier, especially if your hair tangles easily after washing.
Step 6: Add Moisture and Shine to Your Ends
The ends of your hair are the oldest part of your hair, which is why they often show dryness first.
For dry ends, I love finishing with a small amount of Kinessences Nourish Oil Cream.
Work a small amount through your mid-lengths and ends to add softness and polish without automatically reaching for a huge amount of product.
Start small.
You can always add more.
Trying to remove half a bottle of hair oil from your head is considerably less entertaining.
Step 7: Don’t Overdo Protein
Protein and bond-repair treatments can be incredibly helpful for damaged or chemically processed hair, but more is not always better.
Hair needs moisture too.
If your hair starts feeling unusually stiff, rough, or brittle while you’re using multiple strengthening products, it may be worth adjusting your routine.
Healthy-looking hair usually comes from finding the right balance between strengthening and moisture rather than throwing every treatment in the cabinet at it at once.
Step 8: Protect Your Hair Between Salon Visits
What you do between appointments makes a huge difference in how your hair looks and feels.
Try to minimize unnecessary heat, use color-safe products, keep your hair properly conditioned, and avoid stretching too long between trims once your ends are visibly splitting.
Sun exposure can also affect color-treated hair, particularly during the summer or when you’re spending a lot of time outdoors.
If that’s part of your lifestyle, Kinactif Sun Protective Milk can be an easy addition to your routine for extra protection.

For Very Dry or Dehydrated Hair
Shop The Deep Hydration Routine

Choose this one if your biggest concerns are dryness, roughness, lack of softness, or hair that just never seems to feel hydrated enough.
My Simple Hair Care Routine
If you want to keep things easy, here’s the basic routine I recommend:
Wash Day
- Color-safe or hydrating shampoo
- Conditioner
- Leave-in treatment
- Heat protection when styling
- A small amount of oil or finishing treatment through the ends
Once or Twice a Week
Replace your regular conditioner with a nourishing mask or deeper treatment.
That’s it.
Hair care does not need to involve 14 products and a chemistry degree.
Consistency usually matters much more than having an overcrowded bathroom shelf.
My Stylist Philosophy
I believe healthy hair should still feel like your hair.
The goal isn’t to overload it with products. It’s to understand what your hair needs and use the right products consistently.
Color-treated hair often needs extra moisture and protection, especially when highlights, balayage, bleach, hot tools, or regular salon services are part of the picture.
The products I carry at SB Beauty Collective are products I genuinely believe belong in a professional-quality home routine.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I wash color-treated hair?
There isn’t one schedule that works for everyone.
Many people with dry or color-treated hair do well washing a few times per week rather than every day, but your ideal frequency depends on your scalp, hair texture, activity level, and styling routine.
How often should I use a hair mask?
Once a week is a good starting point for many people.
Very dry, coarse, bleached, highlighted, or heavily processed hair may benefit from twice-weekly use, while fine hair may need it less often.
Should I use conditioner and a hair mask together?
You don’t always need both during the same wash.
Depending on the product and your hair type, a mask can often replace your regular conditioner on treatment days.
A 2-in-1 product like the Kinactif Nourishing 2-in-1 Conditioner + Mask can also make it easier to adjust your routine depending on how your hair feels.
What is the best hair routine for highlighted or balayage hair?
Focus on gentle cleansing, regular conditioning, weekly masking, leave-in protection, and minimizing unnecessary heat.
Highlighted hair often needs additional moisture and protection because lightening can make the hair feel drier.
For an easy starting point, take a look at The Color Care Routine.
What should I use if my hair is extremely dry?
Start with moisturizing products rather than adding more and more styling products.
The Kinessences Nourish Gentle Shampoo, Kinessences Nourish Intense Mask, and Kinessences Nourish Oil Cream are a great combination for a hydration-focused routine.
Or, if you’d rather keep it simple, The Deep Hydration Routine puts the routine together for you.
How do I keep color-treated hair shiny?
Use gentle, color-conscious products, avoid excessive heat, keep the hair moisturized, and use a small amount of finishing treatment through the ends.
Regular trims also help prevent dry or split ends from making your hair look dull.
